What do you want to see next in Brooklyn? The project with the most votes gets funded!

This year there are 10 community-generated projects on the ballot:

1. Community Kitchen with Classes

Create a food center than offers cooking classes for the community. People come to the center to get food from a pantry and then learn to make a meal from what they selected. Optional: Field trips to farms.

2. Job Training and Support for Employment for Single Parents

Provide job training and pathways towards employment for single parents, fostering independence and economic growth.

3. Young Parent Support and Classes

Parenting hub that offers childcare for participants in order for them to receive coaching and support as well as helping them navigate crucial resources, benefits and connections.

4. Reducing Recidivism Rates

A mentorship program for justice-impacted individuals that offers trauma-informed counseling, job training, know your rights workshops and reentry support to help with successful transition back to society.

5. Youth Led Community Ventures (Cost: $235,000)

This is an entrepreneurship series for youth to create community-enhancing projects. Through mentorship with business owners, youth create beautification initiatives that foster pride and economic opportunities.

6. Youth LGBTQ+ Safe Space (Cost: $235,000)

A community hub fostering safety, support, and culture for at risk LGBTQ+ youth by offering resources like mental health services, crisis support mentorship, anti-violence training, housing aid, food stipends, and pathways to employment.

7. Intergenerational Financial Education and Employment Workshops (Cost: $235,000)

A program that provides education around financial literacy to help save and invest for the future. Community building combined with practical skills and workshops in an intergenerational model.

8. Youth Employment Training and Partnerships (Cost: $235,000)

Classes for youth focused on green jobs and technology, that offer certifications with paid stipends. Engage local and national business support to give a broad range of experience.

9. Period Pantry for Feminine Hygiene Supplies and Education (Cost: $235,000)

Create a central resource for feminine hygiene products for young women free of charge. Include an educational component including proper use, hormonal changes, pain relief, and health care.

10. Youth Job Training and Employment Opportunities (Cost: $235,000)

Connect youth with job training through outreach and awareness of training opportunities. Offer presentation & counseling on employment, career, trade opportunities at various locations with unengaged youth.

They got 22,982 Votes and that project was funded (for $200,000)! Your vote matters. From May 14th to June 25th, 2025, all New York City residents ages 11 and older, regardless of immigration status, can vote on how to spend $4M of the city budget to address their community needs!

PVOL101: SOLAR TRAINING – SOLAR ELECTRIC DESIGN AND INSTALLATION (GRID-DIRECT) – ONLINE

  • CONTACT HOURS: 10-20 hrs/week

PVOL101 is your gateway to a career in the solar industry.  It all starts with the fundamentals, and a solid understanding of various components, system architectures, and applications for PV systems.  Other topics include site analysis, system sizing, array configuration, and performance estimation; electrical design characteristics such as wiring, overcurrent protection, and grounding; a detailed look at module and inverter specifications and characteristics; mounting methods for various roof structures and ground-mounts; and an introduction to safely and effectively commissioning grid-direct PV systems.  This course focuses on grid-direct PV systems, but covers material critical to understanding all types of PV systems.  

PVOL203: SOLAR TRAINING – PV SYSTEM FUNDAMENTALS (BATTERY-BASED) – ONLINE

  • CONTACT HOURS: 40 Hrs

PV systems with energy storage are a rapidly growing segment of the industry. This course builds a foundation for understanding many battery-based applications, in which the complexity far exceeds that of a grid­-direct PV system. Load analysis is addressed along with other critical design criteria such as battery bank design, equipment options, and electrical integration of system components. Component options are covered in detail, including batteries, charge controllers, and battery­-based inverters. Different battery chemistries, associated pros and cons, and cost comparisons are investigated along with safety and maintenance considerations unique to battery­-based PV systems. 

PREREQUISITE COURSE: Before participating in the PVOL203 course, students MUST complete PV101.

(1) Enhance the neighborhood’s parks and gardens by keeping them clean and increasing activities in these safe, free, healthy spaces.

(2) Expose and train local youth in Green Job skills focusing on urban agriculture, energy efficiency, and solar panel installation.

Making East New York Clean & Green!
The gardens in East New York provide healthy food to the food desert of East New York, mitigate excess heat and serve as spaces for cultural activities.
Through community clean ups of parks and streets, we live the motto: Keep ENY Clean & Green!
East New York Restoration LDC works with Community Gardens to improve air quality; mitigate the urban heat island affect; and, provide a quiet oasis.
Hydroponic Gardening. The East New York Community learns about growing food in water through classes taught by Leo Pinkney and Hasani Douglas.
HVAC Training and Energy Efficiency Classes.
East New York Restoration LDC has been operating the Green Ready Alternative Energy Program (GRAEP) for five years.
GRAEP is a comprehensive clean-energy course designed by Professor Brett Sims.
East New York Restoration LDC GRAEP students learn to install solar microgrids.
East New York Restoration LDC GRAEP students install mini solar grids in ten community gardens allowing gardeners to use power tools during the day using clean energy, Music and lighting for programs, and Cell phone chargers during power outages.
East New York Restoration LDC has initiated environmentsl education, demonstations on recyling, promoted energy efficiency opportunities and organized Green Job Fairs for local residents.
East New York Restoration LDC led a NYSERDA funded project which resulted in 200+ homeowners in East New York and Brownsville receiving solar panels on their homes and reducing their energy bills at no cost to the homeowner.

The New York City Department of Sanitation has announced that registration is now open for those interested in working as Emergency Snow Laborers for the 2022-2023 winter season. Emergency Snow Laborers are per-diem workers who remove snow and ice from bus stops, crosswalks, fire hydrants, and step streets after heavy snowfalls. Snow Laborers earn $17 per hour to start, and $25.50 per hour after 40 hours are worked in a week.

Snow laborers must be at least 18 years of age, be eligible to work in the United States, and be capable of performing heavy physical labor. Additionally, candidates must be vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus. All applicants must bring the following items at the time of registration:

  • Two small photos (1 ½ square)
  • Original and copy of two forms of identification
  • Social Security card
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination

Those interested in becoming a Snow Laborer must register for an application appointment at nyc.gov/snow. Registration appointments take place at the Department’s 59 citywide garages. Applicants should not attend the appointment if they have any COVID-19 symptoms.
